Joseph P. Kennedy,
the founding father, was a determined,
resourceful child whose mother, Mary
Augusta, dressed her only son in fine
clothes and sought to make him a gentleman.
Years later when Kennedy was one of
the richest, most powerful men in America,
he pointed out to his youngest son Edward
Kennedy that in his first formal portrait,
he defiantly clenched his left fist,
perhaps upset at the dress his mother
had imposed on him. (Loretta Kennedy
